About The Ontario Fuel Tax Act

The Ontario Fuel Tax is a direct tax on consumers for the purchase of clear or unmarked fuel in Ontario. Both diesel and gasoline are included in the Ontario Fuel Tax Act and are taxed at a rate of 14.3% and 14.7% respectively.

The Ontario Fuel Tax Rebate Program allows consumers to obtain a tax refund for gasoline and diesel that is used to operate Power Take Off (PTO) equipment and for any equipment or vehicle that is not licensed or required to be licensed under the Highway Traffic Act and operated in Ontario by any business, industry or institution.

Fuel tax is where the Ontario Government gets the funding to do road repairs. However if fuel is being used for a purpose other than driving on the roads, you shouldn't have to pay the tax to fix the roads. Meaning you are entitled to a refund of this tax.
